Where Originality.ai Excels
GPT-4 and GPT-4o text gets caught at 96%, which makes sense. Those are the most widely deployed models and almost certainly dominate Originality.ai's training set. That 96% figure matches Turnitin's top-tier performance on the same model family.
Longer documents also play to its strengths. On anything over 2,000 words, accuracy hit 97% in our tests. More text means more statistical signal to work with, and Originality.ai capitalizes on that well.
Where Originality.ai Struggles
Claude detection: 89%. A noticeable drop from GPT numbers. Claude generates text with marginally higher perplexity and more sentence-length variation, and those small differences seem to partially slip past Originality.ai's classifier.
Short text: Under 300 words, accuracy fell to about 81%. Every detector weakens on short samples, but Originality.ai takes a harder hit than Turnitin, which holds around 90% even on brief submissions.
Non-native English speakers: This is the ugly one. Our 50 human essays included 15 from non-native writers. Originality.ai wrongly flagged 3 of them (20% false positive rate for that subgroup) while misidentifying zero of the 35 native-speaker essays.
